Callout for Conifer photos!
Hello all, if you're receiving this, you are a Ground Shots newsletter subscriber or a friend, comrade, or Ground Shots subsack publication subscriber. I have a request from the world of plant geeks out there who love my work and who might want to help, or get involved.
While preparing for my Ethnobotany of Juniper class which I am holding tonight on ZOOM, I have updated a few things on my Juniper plant profile originally written in 2018, revised some in winter 2021 with new information and photos, and again this past month. In preparation for putting these profiles into a physical book form, I am working on filling in pieces of the profiles, including getting more photos of plants I have not been able to snag myself, or at least snag in quality.
I know I could use wikicommons, and I do sometimes, but it’s cool to get photos from people I’m more in connection with out in the field, on the land where they live or places other people travel.
Here’s what I’m looking for.
I need photographs from trees or shrubs in the Cypress plant family from where you live, and written permission to use them. I need to know where it was photographed, your name if you took the photo, and the location, time of year. Photos of the foliage, bark, a photo showing the whole tree shape, and ‘berry-like cones’ (berries) would be helpful. I am not interested in super low quality or blurry photos.
Here are the species I would like photographs of, and since the Ground Shots Project and Podcast have fans and listeners from all over who are familiar with plants, I know many of you live near trees or shrubs in this family. I will be going over the photos and assuring they are the correct ID, and if I am unsure I will not use, or say name the photograph appropriately (like using spp. or sp. after the genus to note the plant’s unknown, broad or unsure species)
Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) (west coast)
Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) (California sierras or northern California)
Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) (California)
Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) anywhere, a popular ornamental
Yellow Cedar (Cupressus nootkatensis) B.C. and Alaska
Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) Pacific Northwest and inland Northwest
Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) east coast coastal areas
Port Orford Cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) coastal Oregon and northern California
Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) New England and Canada, upper midwest
Stinking-Cedar (Torreya taxifolia) - very rare- North Florida and in private preserves
McNab Cypress (Cupressus macnabiana) -endemic to California serpentine soils
Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) - endemic to coastal California but widely planted
Red Berry juniper (Juniperus pinchotii) - Texas
Alligator Juniper (Juniperus deppeana) Southwest and Texas
Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei) Texas
Oval Gland Juniper (Juniperus ovata) Texas
SO yeah, if you send me a photo, I may use in my online plant profile and a future book. Make sure to put the name of the plant in the email header, your name if you photographed or or whoever did, permission to use the photo, location where it was taken and date-time of year the photo was taken. Also, if you have any special relationship with the tree, let me know!
